About

Mongla is Bangladesh's second seaport, made available to Nepal for transit trade — giving eastern Nepal an alternative to the Indian corridor.

Role for Nepal cargo

Cargo moves via the Banglabandha–Phulbari route (a short transit through India) toward the Kakarbhitta area in far-eastern Nepal. It is an emerging option, strongest for eastern Nepal and for trade with Bangladesh itself, though the multi-border routing adds complexity.

How cargo reaches Nepal

Ocean vessel → Mongla Port → Banglabandha–Phulbari transit → Kakarbhitta (border) → Eastern Nepal

Inland leg to Birgunj ICD: via Kakarbhitta (eastern Nepal). Mode: Road/rail via Banglabandha–Phulbari.

Feeds the Kakarbhitta ICD.
